Hubert Hurkacz met the first opponent of the 2023 US Open Grand Slam on Thursday. The Polish tennis player was seeded in the New York event. What does the tournament standings look like?

As part of this year’s international championships in the USA, Hubert Hurkacz received the 17th number and found himself in the second quarter of the tournament standings. His first opponent will be the Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler.

This could be a chance for Hurkacz

If the 26-year-old Wrocław wins the first game, the Moldovan Radu Albot or the Briton Jack Draper will stand in his way. Access to the third round could mean a duel with the Russian Karen Khachanov or the Americans Michael Mmoh or John Isner ending his career.

The Pole’s draw has to be seen as promising, given his form and Draper’s or Khachanov’s previous health issues. The highest seeds in the Hurkacz quarter are the Russians: Andrei Rublev (whom he can face in the fourth round) and Daniil Medvedev (whom he can face in the quarter-finals).

The biggest stars will be waiting

The good news for Hurkacz is that he will avoid the most dangerous rivals. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz was seeded and traditionally opens the tournament. “Hubi” can only meet him in the semi-finals. The Spaniard will begin his performance in New York with a duel with the German Dominik Koepfer. In his neighborhood, the Italian Jannik Sinner and the German Alexander Zverev should be dangerous.

On the other hand, Serbian Novak Djokovic, who is aiming for the 24th Grand Slam championship of his career, was seeded ‘two’ and found himself in the bottom half of the tournament standings. In his neighborhood were placed m.in. The Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the American Taylor Fritz or the Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

Further up in the third quarter, the biggest stars will be Denmark’s Holger Rune and Norway’s Casper Ruud, who reached the final in New York last year. The U.S. reps could get in the way of the quarterfinals: Frances Tiafoe could face Ruud in the fourth round, and Tommy Paul could meet Rune at that point.

The 2023 US Open Grand Slam main draw begins Monday, August 28. The winner of the men’s singles tournament will be announced on Sunday 10 September.
