– I will beat Jakob

BISLETT STADION (Dagbladet): If you haven’t already, it’s time to put down the name Magnus Tuv Myhre.

The development of the 23-year-old player is tremendous: over 5000 meters he pushed his own personal best from 15.02 in 2019 to 13.56 in 2020, 13.38 in 2021, 13.27 in 2022 and above all to 13, 09 this year.

The jump is huge. The growth of Norwegian athletics behind the Ingebrigtsen brothers and Karsten Warholm is booming.

Where Narve Gilje Nordås (24) constantly faces the Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen (22) over 1500 meters, Tuv Myhre intends to fight well with the superb running prodigy of Sandnes over 5000 meters.

At the Bislett Games, the 23-year-old made a strong impression by becoming the best Norwegian and beating, among others, the trailblazer Henrik Ingebrigtsen by nine seconds.

Gonna beat Jakob within two years

– Do you think it’s possible to beat even Jakob eventually?

– Yes. He is not unbeatable. But I have to take it a year at a time. Jakob is the best runner in the world over 5000 and 1500 meters. It’s not fair, just beat him. I have to take a year at a time, Magnus Tuv Myhre told Dagbladet.

– How many years does it take to beat Jakob?

– It is unlikely to happen next year, but say in two years. Then I will be nearby. Everyone aims to be the best in the world. I have that too. And then I have to beat Jakob. It’s fun to join them in training and see where the level is. I see that I am approaching. It’s possible to improve me more than Jakob, so I can at least minimize the gap, says the 23-year-old.

– Do you aim to become the best in the world?

– Yes. I just have to work on it. So it loosens up. I have to keep hope.

Henrik Ingebrigtsen pays homage to ambition, but gives talent little chance to chastise his little brother.

– I like the mentality. But if he does 20 seconds better… he still has no chance, Henrik Ingebrigtsen told Dagbladet.

Already at the top of Europe

Magnus Tuv Myhre improved his own time by more than ten seconds in the sea of people at Bislett Stadium last week. He’s now number three in Norway all-time, and it’s probably only a matter of time before he hits the 13.07 CM requirement.

– I run 18 seconds faster this year than last year. Next year I will go under 13 minutes in the 5000. Then I will see how far I can end up going under the meter, Myhre tells Dagbladet.

– Less than 13 minutes at 5000 – so you really start eating cherries with the fat ones?

– Absolutely. It’s a few meters from the best, but in a few years it should be possible to get there.

– And from an EC point of view, are you already up there?

– Yes absolutely. There aren’t many in Europe that are suitable for white people under 13. I hope to fight for EC medals next year. It’s clear that Jakob will be hard to beat next year, but fighting for the medals behind him should be possible.

Sensational development

– What is behind your huge progress this season?

– I have hardly been sick or injured this winter. The winter was impeccable with many good sessions. He voted session after session, and you can see the progress from time to time. Then you gain confidence that you’re on the right track, says the 23-year-old.

– Jakob showed that it is possible for a Norwegian to become the best in the world. Surely it has something to do with the optimism and faith of those of you who come after?

– Yes absolutely. Growing up, I thought running was just for Africans. Jacob refuted it. If you put in the work, anything is possible.

Magnus Tuv Myhre earned a spot in the 5,000 meters at the Diamond League athletics meeting in Lausanne on June 30.
