Only one seed, Ekaterina Aleksandrova, will play in the semi-finals of the WTA 250 tournament in Cleveland. Against all expectations, the French Caroline Garcia and the American Sloane Stephens were eliminated.

On Thursday, Cleveland was once again hampered by rain, but all of the quarterfinals were played. Top seed Caroline Garcia (WTA 7) was eliminated, losing 4-6, 1-6 to Lin Zhu (WTA 48). For the Chinese, this is the second victory against a tennis player in the Top 10 ranking. In the third round of this year’s Australian Open, she knocked out Greek Maria Sakkari.

In 85 minutes, Garcia served eight aces, but only scored eight of 20 points on his second serve. Zhu blocked four out of five break points and converted five out of 10 break points. It was the second encounter for these tennis players. In 2012 in Suzhou (ITF), it was a Frenchwoman who won.

Sloane Stephens (WTA 38) entered the court twice. First, she finished the second round match and defeated Mirra Andreyeva (WTA 67) 6:3, 6:3. In the quarter-finals, the American lost unexpectedly 1-6, 3-6 to Sara Sorribes (WTA 95). The 2017 US Open champion had four breaks and eight assists.
