Montreal (WTA 1000) is full of surprises. Greek Maria Sakkari and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia said goodbye to the tournament. Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic stopped Karolina Woźniacka of Denmark.

Two Grand Slam finalists called back and in Montreal they surprised their top-ranked rivals. Danielle Collins (WTA 48) defeated Maria Sakkari (WTA 8) 6-4, 6-2. In the first set, the Greek chased after her and from 1:5 she was close to 4:5. However, she did not reverse her fate, because in the 10th game she dropped out of the bid. In the second set, she made two breaks, but lost her serve four times.

In 86 minutes, Sakkari converted four of nine break points. Collins converted seven of his 11 break points. It was the third meeting of these tennis players. In the previous two (San José 2018, Guadalajara 2022), the Greek savored the victories after three hundred fights. The American Australian Open 2022 finalist won her 11th victory against a Top 10 tennis player, the first of the year.

Collins will next face Leylah Fernandez (WTA 81), who beat Beatriz Haddad Maia (WTA 12) 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. The Brazilian went from 5:7, 1:3. She defended the match ball and led in the third set. There was only one break, which the Canadian got at 5:3.

The battle lasted two hours and 55 minutes. There were nine breaks, five of which were scored by Fernandez. The Canadian 2021 US Open finalist scored nine more points (107-98) to take a 2-1 record lead against Haddad Maia. These tennis players met for the second time in Canada. A year ago in Toronto (where the WTA tournament takes place in even years), the Brazilian proved to be better.

Marketa Vondrousova (WTA 10) was not surprised and beat Karolina Woźniacka 6:2, 7:5. The Czech led 6:2, 3:0 when Dunka gave chase and took the lead in the second set. It was 4:3 then 5:4 for the former leader of the classification. The last three matches have been won by this year’s Wimbledon champion and the third set hasn’t happened.

In an hour and 46 minutes, Vondrousova saved five of seven break points and converted five of 15 break points. It was the first match between these Grand Slam champions. Woźniacka is the winner of the 2018 Australian Open. The Dane has resumed her career after more than 3.5 years of absence. During this time, she became the wife of basketball player David Lee and gave birth to two children.
