Launch of a new digital solution for reindeer herding
On May 22, the Norwegian Directorate of Agriculture launched Reindig, a new digital solution for reindeer herding. It will facilitate the process of submitting applications for subsidies and the annual report on reindeer herding, both for reindeer owners and for the reindeer herding management.
Widar Skogan, director of the reindeer herding department at the Norwegian Directorate of Agriculture, says that over the past two years they have worked hard to create a new system for reindeer herders to apply for subsidies and transmit a message about reindeer herding on their mobile phone.
He says that in reality, if you submit a reindeer herding notice, then submit a grant application, and there are no errors in the submitted documents, you can actually receive a grant within a period of time of a week.
Johan Ivvár Gaup is one of the people who used Reindig for this year’s reindeer herding report. He says he is very satisfied with the solution.
– He estimates it took him about 10 minutes to complete the message and highlights the mobile solution as a big plus.
He hasn’t received his scholarship yet, but he learns that someone has already received it before the application deadline.
– It was rare for the Sami reindeer herders to receive subsidies this early, so it at least seems to be working very well.
The new solution means that slaughterhouses report how much each reindeer owner sold to them. Each year, the manager of a siida share must inform the State Administrator responsible for reindeer breeding. The report should contain information on reindeer arrivals and departures, who is a member of the siida share and how many reindeer each owner owns.
The notification forms the basis for processing applications for grants for silk stocks and tame reindeer herds, as well as for game compensation.
