After ten rounds of VAR in Eliteserien, the system was thoroughly evaluated on Wednesday at the VAR center in Oslo.
Among other things, it was above all on the use of time in marginal situations that chief referee Terje Hauge focused after the evaluation, when it comes to challenges for the VAR in the Eliteserien .
– Complex situations on which we have to spend time. With the help of the experience and knowledge we share in the group, I think we will grow with the task. Individual situations will always be discussed, but we will do everything to reduce the time spent now that we have gained experience, he told TV 2.
As for “on-field reviews”, ie situations where referees go to the screen to judge, an average of 2 minutes and 15 seconds is used so far this season. This is a number that many people would like to see lower.
– We want things to go a little better, but at the end of the day it’s about making the right decisions. So so far we are happy to have a high success rate on the decisions we have made, says judge Espen Eskås.
The chief referee also admitted errors were made by VAR on six occasions. This applies to situations where VAR should have intervened, but did not.
This applies to two situations where a yellow card should have been turned into a red card, two goals that should not have been approved and two penalty shootouts.
The context for this was a high list, which Hauge now says he lowered somewhat.
– That’s not good enough, we totally agree with that. Then it turns out that four of the situations come from the first three rounds, when we just boarded, but then we managed to adjust that slightly by making the list. a bit, Hauge told NTB.
The VAR version that will be used in the Eliteserien is a “cheap” version of the one you have in the big leagues and championships. In the Eliteserien, five to 13 camera angles are used.
For comparison, 42 different camera angles were used in each stadium during the World Cup in Qatar. The same goes for the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and other top leagues and tournaments in Europe.
Hauge is nevertheless adamant that the “cheap” version is more than sufficient.
– It is, in my opinion at least, that we just have to gain experience, and with experience we will do it faster by putting that under our skin a bit and interacting with VAR and the replay operator will also go faster.
