Last December, the Ukrainian military reportedly planned covert attacks against Russian forces and Wagner’s soldiers in Syria.
It appears in documents leaked by US intelligence services, writes the Washington Post on Thursday evening.
Read all about the alleged plans here: This is how Ukraine planned to attack Russia on Syrian soil.
The newspaper itself is said to have had access to the documents thanks to the much-discussed leaks, where a 21-year-old openly posted confidential documents via the Discord chat service.
According to the document, the attacks on Russian forces were to be carried out with Syrian assistance – more than 1,500 kilometers from kyiv.
According to American intelligence, the new arena planned for the war was intended to inflict significant damage and costs on both the Russian army and the battleships of the Wagner Group.
It might also have forced Russia to send some of its forces from its positions in Ukraine away from the front lines, and into Syria, the documents say.
In December, President Volodymyr Zelenskyj reportedly canceled these plans.
The documents claim that in the fall, the Kurdish group of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) should have asked for training, air defense systems and guarantees that the Ukrainians would not reveal their involvement.
They also reportedly demanded that Russian forces in Kurdish areas not be attacked.
– The mentioned documents concerning our forces are not authentic. Our forces have never been involved in the Russian-Ukrainian war, SDF spokesman Farhad Shami told The Washington Post.
According to the documents, Turkey must also have been aware of the plans.
