World Cup 2022: Belgium – Morocco. Unexpected defeat of the favorites

Just before the first whistle, an unusual situation occurred. Bono, the main goalkeeper of the Moroccan national team, took part in the warm-up and then left for the presentation and the national anthems, but the match was started by his substitute. According to the media, the Sevilla goalkeeper suffered an injury which ultimately prevented him from playing against Belgium.

At the end of the first half, the Moroccan team took the lead against all odds. Hakim Ziyech scored from a free kick. However, it turned out that in this situation one of his teammates was in an offside position and the goal was eventually disallowed.

After the break, both teams tried to open the scoring. Dries Mertens, who appeared on the pitch in the second half of the match, was looking for his chance to score. What the favorites failed to do, the Moroccan team did. In the 73rd minute, Abdelhamid Sabiri scored directly from a free kick, which arrived on the pitch a few minutes earlier.

It turned out that the Sampdoria player’s goal was not the last for Morocco in this game. Zakaria Aboukhlal made it 2-0 in added time.

Belgium won 1-0 against Canada on Matchday 1, while Morocco drew with Croatia scoreless. In the second of Sunday’s matches in this group, Croatia beat Canada 4-1.
