World Cup of Hockey: Canada’s penalty win

The Canadians in the capital of Latvia, in dramatic circumstances, beat the Slovaks 2:1 in the Group B match of the World Cup. Jack Quinn scored the decisive goal for them in the 8th round of penalties. The Buffalo Sabers player, who converted 3 of 5 penalties in his rookie NHL regular season last season, started his streak today and missed his first attempt, but coach André Tourigny gave him one more opportunity that he did not miss.

Canada itself won the penalty shootout 3-2. Before Quinn, Cody Glass and Michael Carcone struck for her, which finished the 5th round, saving her team from defeat. Richard Pánik and Martin Chromiak scored for Slovakia.

Jake Neighbors gave the Canadians the lead in the 8th minute and Peter Cehlárik equalized in the 17th minute on the power play. They were the only goals in the 65 minutes before the penalty shootout, although the referees awarded 18 penalties to both teams and they had plenty of chances to come up front. The Slovaks played like this for 12 minutes and 38 seconds, turning it into a single goal. Canada had more players on the ice for 14 minutes and 37 seconds, but didn’t take advantage.
