The Consumer Council files a complaint with Meta | Financial Notice

– We must put an end to the company’s cat and mouse game with the European authorities, writes the Consumer Council in a press release Press release.

In the complaint, which was sent to various national data supervisory authorities, it is notably highlighted how the social media giant violates legal requirements regarding fair processing, purpose limitation and data minimization.

– Meta has repeatedly attempted to obfuscate how they violate users’ privacy rights, most recently with their “say yes or pay” model. It is high time that the European authorities tackle the functioning of the company, believes specialist director Finn Lützow-Holm Myrstad.

The organizations believe that in practice this means forcing users to pay for their own privacy, because users who do not fear publicity can continue to use social media for free. Lützow-Holm Myrstad further states that the company’s business model is fundamentally at odds with European and Norwegian law.

Meta owns, among others, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, three of the largest social media platforms in the world. Since 2018, when the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force, there has been an ongoing battle between the EU and Meta.

– Meta presents privacy as a right that we must pay for. We expect the authorities to clearly state that fundamental rights are neither for sale nor something that companies can choose or not, says Myrstad.
