Ålesund: – Person killed after explosion accident

Update: At 12:30 p.m., police write in a press release that one person has been confirmed dead after the explosion accident. Relatives have been notified.

Police in Møre og Romsdal reported at 10:14 a.m. that there were injuries following what they call a serious explosion accident in Ålesund.

– Emergency services are on the way to the scene to save lives and secure the crash site, they wrote on Twitter.

Shortly after, they confirm that a person is seriously injured. The person was freed from the explosives.

– We have received a report of an explosion accident, where one person has been confirmed injured. We have no insight into whether there are others, police operations manager Jens Dahl told Dagbladet.

At 11:50 a.m., operations director Sindre Molnes can confirm that he is absolutely certain that there are no more injuries.

An air ambulance is needed.

The accident occurred in a developing area, where there are many shops, said the operations manager. Police received a report of the accident at 9:57 a.m.

The crisis team alerted

There should no longer be any danger of an explosion, police wrote in an update at 10:28 a.m.

However, at 10.55 a.m. they write that technical survey work has been suspended until they are one hundred percent sure that there is no longer any risk of an explosion.

Barricades will be erected around the accident site. The municipality’s crisis unit was also notified. They participate in the care of the people concerned.

Service manager Paul Olav Vestre at switchboard 110 in Møre og Romsdal confirms to Dagbladet that the fire service is there with units and help.

No building is on fire, he said.

Ålesund Mayor Eva Vinje Aurdal said the crisis team was quickly called in and will now be there for those affected by the crash.

– I can say on behalf of the people of Ålesund that it is very sad when accidents like this happen here, says Aurdal.

Little is known about the accident

The general manager of the business park in question says they still know little about the accident, but are now in dialogue with the contractor who was involved in the accident as part of the land development in the area.

– It’s only been a few minutes since we learned about it, so we’re in the process of getting our bearings and getting the right information on what’s going on and the way forward.
