Canada suspends arms sales to Turkey

Canada suspends all arms sales to NATO member Turkey. The country is currently investigating Turkey’s use of military technology in the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

– In line with Canada’s robust export control regime and as a result of the ongoing fighting, I have suspended the affected export licenses to Turkey, so that we have time to further assess the situation, said Monday Minister of Foreign Affairs François-Philippe Champagne.

He ordered an investigation into reports in Canadian media that Canadian unmanned drone imaging and targeting systems were used by Azerbaijan in clashes with Armenia.

Disarmament activists have documented the sale of Wescam equipment to Turkey, which is a close ally of Azerbaijan.

In October 2019, Canada decided to freeze the issuance of export licenses for military exports to Turkey, following military operations against the Kurds in northern Syria, but the decision was lifted in May.
