Canadian wildfires shut down American sports

Americans must suspend several sporting events following forest fires in Canada. Air quality is particularly bad in New York.

The first running of this year’s Belmont Stakes had to be postponed.

On Thursday, the first galloping race of the Belmont Stakes in New York was canceled. Gov. Kathy Hochul said the entire traditional event was in danger.

– I hope we can start, but there are no guarantees regarding the weather. A decision will be made at the last minute, she said.

If air quality exceeds 200, races are canceled. Horses must be approved by veterinarians if the quality is between 150 and 200.

Hundreds of wildfires in Canada have brought a blanket of smoke and fog over several cities in the northeastern United States this week, and air pollution warnings have been issued to millions of people.

Baseball games between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox took place on Thursday after having been scheduled to be off on Wednesday. At that time, the air quality at Yankee Stadium was 335.

Many NFL teams in the East had to move their practices to venues on Thursday. In the capital, the Washington Nationals baseball team takes action and postpones its game against Arizona which was initially scheduled to be played on June 22.
