Snow chaos in eastern Norway: – – Unusually high rainfall

On Tuesday there are major traffic problems, canceled flights and public transport problems due to snowy weather.

What for many in eastern Norway was a sweet taste of summer quickly turned into a sour retrospective, characterized by cold, stagnation and delays.

According to state meteorologist Tone Christin Thhaule, there is fortunately better weather in store for those living in eastern Norway.

She says the precipitation is now moving north and northeast.

– The whole precipitation field is heading north, and tonight it’s along the Swedish border, says Thaule, who also points out that snow could continue to fall in the far north of eastern Norway while throughout the day.

Not unusual for April

– The improvement is on the way, absolutely! A northerly wind is expected, and there will gradually be a little less cloud. There can also be periods of sunshine, explains Thaule.

The state meteorologist says that in the past 24 hours there has been a lot of fresh snowfall in several places in eastern Norway.

– At Bjørnholt in Oslo, there has been 30 centimeters of fresh snow since yesterday. Yesterday it was 30 centimeters, and now it’s 60, says Thaule.

In Einavatnet in Veste Toten, no less than 50 centimeters of snow fell in the past 24 hours, write the meteorologists Twitter.

Thaule says the Meteorological Institute included Oslo in the yellow danger warning for snow on Tuesday morning, due to lower than expected temperature.

Although many were surprised Tuesday morning, Thaule says this type of weather change is not abnormal for the month of April.

– April is a typical month where you can get shifts like we have now, where it goes from summer to winter in a week. But there has been an unusually high amount of rainfall locally in the Eastland region, Thhaule says, which may indicate the weather is now heading for better weather.

– Precipitation occurs during the evening, and after that there will be little precipitation. There may be frost at night, and it won’t be as summery in terms of temperature, but at least there won’t be any snow, Thhaule says.

Rainfall record

Along with the snowfall, precipitation records were broken in several places in eastern Norway.

At Blindern in Oslo, 34.5 millimeters fell, the most on record in 24 hours this month. Record amounts of precipitation also occurred at weather stations in Hakadal, Ringsaker, Lunner, Toten and Hønefoss.

The same thing happened further south, in Askim, Rygge, Råde, Fredrikstad and several other places. In Melsom in the municipality of Sandefjord, more than 60 millimeters of rain fell.

Where the precipitation came as snow, and where it rained, is not immediately clear from the statistics.
