Man in his 20s missing after landslide on Kvaløya in Troms

Troms Police report that a man in his 20s has not been found after a landslide hit a mountain in Kvaløya in Tromsø Municipality.

– A person was caught by an avalanche in very steep terrain, according to the police.

The landslide passed near the top of the mountain.

– The emergency services are notified of the incident at 4.17 p.m., but the avalanche is triggered at 2 p.m. There were two people who were together when the avalanche happened, and one tried to look for his companion. In the end, the person in question had to drive down the mountain to get help and then found a person who contacted us, operations manager Eirik Kileng in the Troms police district tells TV 2 .

Kileng says there is very poor coverage in the area, but beyond that he does not have details of why it took so long for emergency services to be notified. .

The missing person was part of a group of foreign tourists.

At 6:44 p.m., the police inform that there is hail in the area, and that they have located several small landslides in the area.

They are not allowed to fly or knock people down. No one has received any sign of life from the man missing since the landslide.

– Rescue Helicopter and Air Ambulance fly when area conditions permit. The terrain is very steep and it is not appropriate to send ground crews in the current conditions. We flew over a bit and saw that several landslides occurred, says Kileng.

Also earlier on Sunday, a man was caught in an avalanche and taken to hospital in an air ambulance with broken bones. This landslide occurred at Skittentinden on Kvaløya.

About the NVE notification service Varsom.no a danger of yellow avalanche was announced on Sunday over most of the country.

For Lyngen, Jotunheimen and Vest-Telemark, the avalanche danger level is orange.
