50 degrees Celsius in Canada – spooky New Year celebrations

Canadians pride themselves on putting up with the cold, but 50 degrees Celsius in two of the country’s central cities is too much. Authorities are now asking people to dress nicely.

Temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius were measured in the cities of Regina and Winnipeg, which have populations of just over 200,000 and 700,000, respectively.

In the country’s capital, Ottawa, it is also cooler than what we are used to. The authorities therefore had to cancel certain events planned to mark the end of the country’s 150th anniversary.

New Year celebrations in Canada are also toned down.

– Events planned for Saturday and Sunday for New Year’s Eve have been modified due to weather warnings of extreme cold and concerns about people’s health and safety, said a statement from the Ministry of Culture.

An ice hockey tournament, which was to take place in front of Parliament to mark the country’s 150th anniversary celebrations, has been moved to an indoor venue. Events with disc jockey duo Carl and Evana Müren, DJ Shub and hip-hop artist Kardinal Offishall were also canceled for New Year’s Eve.

Authorities have issued an extreme cold warning for six of the country’s ten provinces.

– We ask Canadians and visitors to take into account extreme weather conditions and dress warmly, protect themselves from frostbite and other injuries, says the message from the Ministry of Culture.
