(Canada – Germany 5–2) Germany made it to an extremely rare World Cup final, but against favorites they came to a halt – Canada are historic world champions for the 28th time.

But the Germans did not ease the Canadians’ path to gold.

It’s been 70 years since they’ve been there, but in their first final since 1953, Germany took a first-half lead through a John Peterka goal.

Three minutes later, Sammy Blais scored 1-1 for ice hockey nation Canada, but the Germans again took the lead.

Daniel Fischbuch made it 2-1, but again the lead was short-lived. Four minutes later, Lawson Crouse equalized to make it 2-2 for Canada.

In the third period, the game changed when Blais scored his second goal of the night to make it 3-2.

Then, Germany’s World Cup gold medal began to look bleak, and with eight minutes to go, hope faded. The Canadians made it 4-2 when Tyler Toffoli took advantage of an error by the German defense and, with a precise drag shot, made his mark on the scoresheet.

Two minutes before regulation time, the affair was neck and neck: Germany pressed for a goal and eliminated their own goalkeeper to be able to play with one more man in attack. He was penalized and Scott Laughton made it 5-2 by putting the puck in an open net.

Prior to the championships, Canada was ranked second in the world, just behind Finland. Germany was ranked ninth.

Canada, who eliminated defending champion Finland in the quarter-finals, can once again claim the World Cup title. This is the 28th time they have won the championship.
