Marketa Vondrousova defeated Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. The Czech finalist of Roland Garros 2019 and Olympic vice-champion will be the rival of Magda Linette.
In Madrid, all 32 seeds received exemption tickets. This group includes Magda Linette (#17). The first rival of the Pole came out of the clash of Marketa Vondrousova (WTA 80) with Marina Bassols Ribera (WTA 119). The Czech player came from 1:3 in the second set and won 6:1, 6:3.
Vondrousova has gone through health transitions, which is why she’s so low in the rankings right now. The Czech is a finalist at Roland Garros 2019 and silver medalist at the last Olympic Games (Tokyo). So far, she has won a title on the WTA circuit, in 2017 in Biel/Bienne.
Both players had six break points in 74 minutes. Vondrousova completed just one serve and had five breaks. The Czech player scored 63 points out of 107 played (58.9%). It was his first meeting with Bassols Ribera.
This is Vondrousova’s second performance in Madrid. Two years ago, she was knocked out in the first round. The Czech had a very promising start in the last two WTA 1000 tournaments. In Indian Wells and Miami, she won three matches each and qualified for the 1/8 finals. In California, she beats Ons Jabeur. This year, together with the Tunisian Vondrousova, she also won the Australian Open.
Linette and Vondrousova will square off on Thursday. This will be the first meeting of these tennis players.
