Mental Health Commission of Canada and NHLPA launch new leadership and education program


TORONTO (January 10, 2024) Today, the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA), in collaboration with Changing Minds and the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), is proud to announce the official launch of FIRST LINEan education and leadership program developed to strengthen the mental health knowledge and skills of NHLPA members.

The first of its kind in professional sport, FIRST LINE was developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, Changing Minds and the NHLPA Health and Wellness Team. specifically for NHL players. This program is designed to directly address issues faced by players and their families.

FIRST LINE will:

  • Increase knowledge about common mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, substance use and self-harm;
  • Provide skills to offer peer support; duck
  • Educate about the stigma of mental illness and how to combat it.

“Collaborate with the Mental Health Commission of Canada to develop FIRST LINE builds on the diligent work of the NHLPA HEALTH & WELLNESS TEAM, who bring value to players' lives by prioritizing mental health wellness and improving “player experience,” said Marty Walsh, executive director of the AJLNH. “Even though the players have had a lot of success during their careers as the best hockey players in the world, that doesn't stop them from facing the same challenges as many others.”

“We are excited to collaborate with the NHLPA on this vital and impactful initiative,” said Shane Silver, vice-president, CSMC and Changing mentalities. “Opening Minds programs have had a positive impact on more than a million participants worldwide, highlighting the universal importance of prioritizing mental health in all aspects of our lives, whether in our career or in our personal sphere. I commend the NHLPA for its commitment to the well-being of its members and for taking a holistic approach to health and well-being.

Two dates, the FIRST LINE The program has been offered to 20 NHL players, with plans to train additional players from the NHLPA membership on a voluntary basis throughout the 2023-24 season and beyond.

“Our goal is that all players who complete the FIRST LINE coaching will be empowered to advocate for their own mental health while supporting the mental health of their fellow players and others,” said Dr. Jay Harrison, NHLPA consultant psychologist and former NHL player. “We are encouraged by the early interest and engagement shown by stakeholders FIRST LINEand we look forward to making a positive impact on their lives.

FIRST LINE is a course designed to be taken in a group, delivered in person or online. All players who finish FIRST LINE training will receive a certificate of completion from Changing Minds and the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
