Russia: – Sinks its own ships

After several attacks on the Kerch Bridge, which connects the Crimean peninsula to the Russian mainland, President Vladimir Putin has apparently had enough.

Last week claimed Ukrainian intelligence services that Russia planned to sink at least six ferries along the bridge. This is to create a protective barrier against multiple attacks.

Naval analyst HI Sutton says it’s now done.

– Russia has placed blockade ships along the west side of the Kerch Bridge, Sutton writes on social media Xformerly known as Twitter.

He thinks it is possible to see the sunken ferries on satellite images of the area.

Six must be lowered

If you compare the latest satellite images of the area above the Kerch Bridge, you will find that several new objects have appeared along the 19 kilometer long bridge.

Last week, Ukrainian intelligence claimed that a Russian ferry had been sunk at deck level and that five others would meet the same fate.

This, they say, is part of Russia’s new line of defense against Ukrainian drone attacks.

However, several experts have expressed skepticism about this method.

– Cannot be stopped

Technology and drone developer Stephen Wright says Insider that the Russian defense system will probably not be effective against further drone attacks.

“I can understand how these blockade ships can be useful against other types of attacks, for example larger ships being hijacked and sent to the deck,” he says.

According to him, it will be almost impossible to stop Ukrainian underwater drones in this way, since they are small and agile.

Important for Russia

The 19-kilometre-long bridge was one of Putin’s high-profile projects after the annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014.

Today, the Kerch Bridge is one of the most important supply routes for Russian troops in Ukraine. It is therefore in the interests of the Russians to protect the bridge against future attacks.

Independent sources have not yet confirmed whether the new objects along the Kerch Bridge are Russian ferries.

Attacks on Russian targets have reportedly escalated after Ukraine unveiled a new maritime drone, which can be loaded with hundreds of pounds of explosives. The marine drone will be according to CNN considered the fastest object in the Black Sea.
